“Security Options” are not available on OS X Lion v10.7 or later and Macs with SSD drives for the following reasons: Disk Utility in Mac OS X v10.4 and later includes an option to securely erase. Note: Secure Erase Options and Wipe Free Space are not available in Disk Utility on Macs with OS X Lion v10.7 or later and SSD drives. These options are not required for SSDs. This is because standard erasure makes it difficult to recover data from an SSD.
