Canva in a nutshell
But before we go into that, let’s first get an overview of what Canva is and how it works. For starters, Canva is a free software that allows users to create beautiful and professional-looking graphics even without any knowledge of either layout or design. To start designing, you will need to sign up for an account. Canva stores all of your files, so you can easily access them, regardless of whether you’re opening it from the app or the web. Here’s the point: you don’t have to master any sophisticated software such as Adobe Photoshop to get started! All you have to do is drag and drop. Browse through all the fascinating elements in the app and select which you think would work best for the project you’re working on. But what kind of projects, you may ask? Well, a lot! Canva gives its users immense flexibility, so they’ll have everything they need for any kind of media graphics, such as the ones below:
What are the things you could do in Canva?
1. Posters, Flyers, and Brochures
Do you have a benefit concert you want to promote? A product you want to sell? Or a company you want to introduce? Whatever your purpose may be, Canva’s posters, flyers, and brochures can always come in handy. They’re great ways to communicate a message or to advertise a specific brand. Canva has hundreds of templates for these kinds of projects. From science posters to grand opening flyers, Canva has you covered!
2. Videos
As if that’s not enough, did you know that you could also edit videos in Canva? That’s right! We all know how tiring it is to produce a video–more so when you’re trying to create an animated one! Correct? So Canva makes it fun and easy for users to edit videos with its pre-made templates and huge database containing thousands of stock videos, music tracks, and animated graphics. With Canva, you get to have more time to focus on your content and practice your speech than spending hours designing your slides. So whether you’re a teacher preparing for your next class or an office worker calculating the monthly expenses, Canva is undoubtedly advantageous for you.
4. Resumes
How exactly do you put together a good resume? Do you have any ideas? Well, Canva has lots of them! Let’s face it. Crafting your resume can be a nerve-racking task. Imagine–a piece of paper could make or break your career! So you certainly need to put your best foot forward. And one of the best ways to make a great first impression is by designing your resume appropriately. Knowing what details to include and which to put where–using Canva takes you one step closer to your dream job.
5. Social media content
Can you live without social media? Quite honestly, perhaps most of us can’t! And Canva knows that. It knows how most of us can’t last a day without posting an Instagram story or uploading a new Facebook post. So Canva provides its users a faster way to design social media materials, such as Facebook covers, YouTube channel arts, Instagram posts, Instagram stories, LinkedIn banners, and more! You know what makes this interesting? All the sizes of your social media content will be optimal. So, when uploaded, they will look exactly how you want them to look.
How to Use Canva: Step by Step Guide
And now you’re set! Since you’ve already learned the basics of Canva and the plethora of things you could do with it, let’s try to get down to the more technical side of things. At this point, I know you have lots of questions, like “How do you change the font?” or “How do you insert a picture?” If so, then today’s your lucky day because, in the next few paragraphs, I will show you how! After successfully logging in to your account, you should be redirected immediately to the homepage. There you will see hundreds of templates that you can choose from. They’re arranged based on types of graphics to make your search easier. Select the template you want to work with by clicking it once. Afterward, you will enter the editing workspace, where you can begin modifying the chosen template.
Step 1. Changing the background
As you can see, the template already comes with a default background. But that doesn’t mean you can no longer change it! To replace the background, tap on it once, making sure you’re not clicking on some other elements. A new menu will then pop up at the bottom. Select “Replace” and choose the image you prefer to have instead. If you like, you can have a solid color as a background as well.
Step 2. Formatting the pictures
If you found the previous step pretty easy, then you won’t break a sweat with this one either! The same logic applies when editing the photos. Tap the element once, and a new set of options will appear at the bottom. For instance, you may see the following: Replace, Crop, Flip, Position, Nudge, among others. See? It’s not difficult at all!
Step 3. Adding texts
In case you didn’t notice (tho it’d be scary if you really didn’t), the texts in the template are way different from the message you want to communicate. To edit, click the text, and a new menu will then pop up. From there, you would be able to change the font size, font color, and more. Also, you could add a text yourself! You can do this by clicking on the bottom-right button with a “cross sign” and selecting “Text” among the options. Step 4. Inserting new elements
Have you noticed that we’ve done this just now? Yes, it’s true! It turns out you can’t just add new texts, but a whole bunch of other elements too! So once again, click on that button at the bottom right and select “Elements.” Lastly, click on an element to adjust its size once it has appeared in your work. You will then see dots around it, each corresponding to a particular dimension. Feel free to move around the dots to achieve the preferred size.
Step 5. Saving the design
We’ve finally come to the last step–saving your work! At this point, you must be proud of yourself for doing all this work. But wait–we still have one last thing to do. So how exactly do you export your file? First off, look at the two arrows at the top-right part of the page. One is facing down while the other is facing up. You can click on the downward arrow to immediately save your design. It will be saved as an image and can be viewed straight from your gallery. Meanwhile, the upward arrow provides more options. You could save your design in different formats and publish them instantly on your social media sites.
